Probably because people think that an R20 is another Golf version. The R20 actually doesn't exist - It became the commonly used term by enthusiasts when referring to the then-yet-to-be-launched Golf R.
So, are you saying that the Golf R isn't doing so well in sales? I'm not sure that VW see it as a high volume seller anyway but more of a flagship in a niche market. I'd have one if I was buying another Golf. I don't like the Scirocco body shape, R or otherwise.
As Dan suggested, if Audi offer a RS3 Sportback with S-tronic then I might be interested, but no lesser spec will do for me. I ain't ever going back to a conventional floor stick manual and I don't want any drop in the performance I have now. If a 2-seater, then a Cayman S (with paddles) but I do also like the TTRS like Jamie's and JonnyC's, as long as S-tronic.
However, even after 5 years and 87k miles, I'm still absolutely in love with my Mk5 GTI and just hope it'll go on forever! It's unbeatable as an allrounder: Transported home a 6ft length of fence recently and last week took 4 (19yo) girlies and their suitcases to the airport for a week in Paris.. I drove a different route home via about 60 miles of cross country twisties and didn't hang about. I love it!
I'm hoping to have a drive of Milltek's Golf R in due course.
Hope you can make the next Porchester meet, Dave - You haven't been around for ages! Still, if I had your girlfriend I'd doubtless be making the same choices.

- Happened so quickly.
